4 Signs It's Time to Replace Your Paver Patio carroll landscaping

If you are unsure if it’s time to replace your patio pavers, keep an eye out for these signs.

A patio is a stunning focal point that improves your home. However, patio pavers aren’t invincible, even though they are built to resist a lot of abuse and survive for years. The simplest fix usually is to replace the damaged pavers, but if the damage is extensive, it would be best to replace the patio. If you are unsure if it’s time to replace your patio pavers, keep an eye out for these signs.

Physical Damage

Pavers can withstand a lot of stress, but they can still crack. If you drop something heavy on a paver, it’s likely to at least chip the stone; if not, break it. Water can also leak into small cracks. During the winter, when this water freezes, it expands and worsens the damage. When enough pavers crack or chip, it will make the space look old and worn. If multiple pavers are damaged, replacing the entire patio is best.

Poor Drainage

When installed, a patio will have a very slight slope to direct water away from the structure. This helps the rainwater run off the stones. However, if you notice that parts of the patio are holding water, it’s a sign that the ground has shifted. If this water is left to sit on the stones, it can cause several problems. The structure or foundation could even be affected if the water is near your house. Standing water is a serious issue that needs to be resolved quickly.

Missing Pavers

Missing pavers are not just unattractive; they can pose a tripping hazard. If you have kids or family members visiting, it could lead to accidents and injuries.

If your patio is only missing a few pavers here and there, you can have them replaced. But if larger areas are missing, you will need a total paver replacement.

Discolored Pavers

If your patio pavers are dull-looking, worn out, stained, or discolored, the only remedy is to replace them. This is just a cosmetic issue since they don’t pose a safety hazard. If you aren’t bothered by the look of discolored pavers, you can certainly hold off on replacing them for a while.
