3 Fire Pit Safety Tips

Learn how to be as safe as possible when operating a fire pit.

Winter is a few weeks away meaning snow is in the near future, but that doesn’t mean you have to stop using your fire pit.  Winter is the perfect time to relax in the backyard with your family around your fire pit.  When using your fire pit, it is essential that you are safe and avoid any harmful accidents.  Luckily, there a few simple precautions and rules you should follow when operating a fire pit that will keep your whole family safe.

Preparation

The position of your fire pit is critical in the preparation stage regardless if it is portable or a permanent structure.  When positioning your firepit, it should be at least 10 to 25 feet away from another structure and placed on a non-flammable surface such as concrete.  It is critical that you avoid placing it on a wooden deck or directly on the grass.  You should place rocks or dirt around your pit to prevent a fire from escaping.  Make sure you fire pit is at least six inches deep at the center and two feet across.

Lighting Your Fire Pit

Before you light your fire pit, it is vital that you check the wind direction and avoid lighting the structure if it is too windy.  You should remove anything flammable that is downwind of your firepit to avoid a fire potentially spreading on your property.  Make sure to burn wood that has been seasoned for at least six months and choose a commercial fire starter stick instead flammable fluids to light your fire.

Using and Extinguishing

When your fire pit is in use, never leave it unattended and always watch children and pets when they are around the structure.  Avoid wearing flammable or loose clothing when operating your fire pit.  Always use spark arrestor when lighting a wood burning firepit.  Put out your fire with water and stir the inside with a shovel to make sure it is fully extinguished.  Make sure to dispose of the ashes in a metal can that is solely used for ash storage.
