Building an outdoor fire pit is an investment in your home and property, but remember that fire pit safety is essential.

An outdoor firepit creates a fun, relaxing evening with the family at home. You can roast marshmallows, tell stories, or keep warm under the stars. Building an outdoor fire pit is definitely an investment in your home and property, but remember that fire pit safety is essential and will keep your family out of harm’s way. Fire can be dangerous and damaging, but safe outdoor fire pits can be a reality with a few good practices. Here are a few fire pit safety tips to safeguard your family and property.

Build the Fire Pit at a Safe Distance

You don’t want your fire pit to cause any damage to your house. So, you should protect your property by installing the fire pit at least 10 feet away from your home and any fences, trees, gardens, or other backyard structures. You’ll also want to ensure the area is free of combustible materials and on a non-combustible surface. Move all outdoor furniture at least three feet away from the fire pit. Keep an eye out for low-hanging branches or drooping power lines overhead, and place the fire pit away from them.

Be Aware of Legal Requirements

Before constructing your fire pit, check the local requirements and regulations for residential fire pits in your area. Some cities and counties have specific rules about where you can place the pit in your backyard.

Light and Extinguish Fires Safely

The safest way to light your backyard fire pit is by using seasoned, dry wood. Place the wood so it only extends to the edge of the fire pit before lighting it. Avoid using accelerants such as gasoline, lighter fluid, or kerosene to make the fire start faster and brighter, as they can create big fires that quickly get out of control. Another option for outdoor fire pits is using propane or natural gas. They are easier to light, and you don’t have to worry about extinguishing burning wood or hot coals after you are done.

No matter which fuel source you choose, keep buckets of water accessible while the fire burns. Extinguish the fire with water, dousing the wood and any remaining embers. Spread the ashes around so they can cool down, and don’t leave the fire pit unattended until it is cool to the touch.
