How can you tell that your deck needs replacement?

One of the best parts of spring and summer is relaxing on your deck. Decks add to your home’s value and add to your enjoyment and satisfaction. When you build a deck, you can do just about anything you want related to the outdoors. Maryland weather can undoubtedly get hot, and it is nice to have a place on your property to soak up the Sun. So, now is the perfect time to ensure your deck is in good condition. How can you tell that your deck needs replacement? Here are a few signs that it may be time for a new deck.

Unsteady Railings

Give your railings a shake! If you notice they are unsteady, check for signs of rot, water damage, or insect damage. Since people tend to lean on them, unsteady railings can be dangerous. If your railing is the only place you find decay, wiggling, or damage, it can likely be replaced without a complete deck repair. Monitor your railings frequently and test them for signs of deterioration as they are critical to safety.

Wobbling Floorboards

This is one of the most obvious signs that your deck is in disrepair. Walk across your deck to get a good sense of how many boards are out of place. Loose boards can indicate that your supports are weak or there is additional damage. This can be a serious safety issue, so you need to replace your deck immediately if this happens regularly.

Damaged Posts

The posts are what hold up your deck. They carry a significant amount of weight, which makes their integrity vital to the support of your deck. If you notice large cracks or damage in the posts, you may have a problem. If you find pools of water around the base of the posts, you should contact a professional to help you divert the water away from their base.

Your Deck is Sagging

Your deck should be a flat, level surface. If you notice dips and sagging spots, it’s time for a replacement. Sagging can be caused by several things such as water damage, rot, or structural damage under the deck.
