The Pros of Planting Perennials

The Pros of Perennials Carroll Landscaping

Consider adding a few plantings, such as perennials, to your lawn.

Consider adding a few plantings, such as perennials, to your lawn. Well-designed outdoor living spaces involve more than having the perfect patio paver or an outstanding outdoor kitchen. Features such as shrubs, trees, and plantings can help bring as much structure to an outdoor living space as hardscape features. Beautiful hardscape features coupled with a lush and dynamic lawn create the ideal outdoor living space. If you’ve done your research on gardening, you know that perennials rank high in longevity compared to annuals. Let’s look at a few of the many pros of planting perennials.

Minimal Maintenance

You don’t have to replant perennials every year like annuals. You can look forward to saving a lot of time and money by not needing to clear flower beds from last year or sow seeds and compost and mulch an area every year. Once perennials are established, they require minimal maintenance because their root systems are well-equipped to give them the nutrients they need.

An Enhanced Soil Structure

Perennials have a much deeper root system than annual plants, meaning that their nutrients are further down in the soil. These nutrients come to the surface where other plants can access them. For example, nitrogen is a valuable plant growth element that a perennial can help draw upwards.

Perennials Also Draw Up Water

Because these types of plantings have deeper root systems, they also draw up water from lower in the soil’s profile. This moisture then becomes available to other plants that may not have as deep of a root system. With this in mind, your soil won’t dry up, and it will be less susceptible to erosion.

A Protective Covering

Even when a perennial dies back, many maintain their foliage, creating a soil coverage comparable to a cover crop. This type of cover protects the soil’s moisture from the sun’s evaporation. It also strengthens the soil’s structural integrity, which prevents erosion brought on by wind and rainfall.
