How To Prepare Your Wooden Deck For Winter

Start preparing your wooden deck for winter right now!

We are in the middle November meaning winter is almost here, and the first snowfall will be here before you know it.  Right now is the perfect time to go around your home and perform some seasonal maintenance tasks, so your property is ready for the winter weather.  You should start with outdoor features including your wooden deck because it is highly susceptible to moisture.  Luckily, there are few simple ways to prepare your deck for winter so that your family can enjoy it once spring comes around.

Inspect and Repair

One of the first things you should do when preparing your wooden deck for winter is to inspect the whole struck for any damage.  If your wooden deck isn’t treated and protected properly, it is susceptible to water damage especially if it an older deck.  Check your staircase that leads up to your deck for any loose or damaged railings.  If you notice light damage to a board or small area of your deck, you should be able to replace that part on your own.  If the damage to your deck is excessive, you should call a professional service to repair the issue.

Clean Thoroughly

Once your deck is inspected, and any repairs are made, you should clean your deck to remove any stains, algae, or mold that might have accumulated on your wooden structure.  The last thing you want is the dirt or algae to remain on your deck in the winter and have the possibility to increase.  You should clean your deck with a bleach-free cleaner and regular garden hose.  Make sure you watch the water pressure of your hose because you do not want to damage your wooden deck.

Apply A Wood Finish

The most effective way to protect your deck from any moisture damage is to apply a wood finish before winter arrives.  There is a wide range of exterior wood finishes that will protect your deck from ice and snow damaging your deck.  You can purchase a wood finish product from your local hardware store.
