Gathering and Relaxation Zones

Every backyard will differ depending on your needs and preferred aesthetics. However, each outdoor living space should have two zones if your goal is to enhance the functionality of your landscape. The first zone is the gathering space where you and your family and guests can eat and socialize. These areas include decks and patios, which we can install in your home.

The second zone should be an area designed to help you relax. Ideas include having a hammock in the corner, a  terrace underneath a large tree or comfortable outdoor seating that’s separated far away from the gathering area.  People often don’t take advantage of the smaller spaces in their yard and tend to focus on the gathering area only. Leaving specific zones designated is visually pleasing and makes your landscape look more open. Also, it gives you or your children a place to hideaway.

Focusing on the Edges of Your Landscape

Once you have decided where your gathering zone is going to be and your relaxation area, edges should be the next focus. It’s vital to design the spaces in between. Creating borders with evergreen shrubs and trees gives your outdoor living space structure. Adding ornamental grasses, perennials, and annuals help add structure, visual appeal, and layers to your backyard. If you’re a beginner gardener, you can experiment with container plants to see if you have a green thumb or give us a call. We’re experts when it comes to plantings.

Tending to the Middle of the Yard

The middle of the yard should be left open. It should be a space without plantings. Areas like this are ideal for letting the children roam around and breaking up the visual aesthetics. In other words, too many plantings can clutter and overwhelm a space. An open area using a variety of different shapes surrounded by plantings adds a centerpiece or focal point.
