Landscape design and architecture are two of our biggest passions.

Landscape design and architecture are two of our biggest passions. You may read all the time about the benefits of landscaping, but landscaping involves more than planting peonies and mowing the lawn. Landscape design has a system, and if done efficiently, it takes the exterior of your home to the next level. Today we’re going to explain a few of the elements of landscape design. Read on to discover more.

Color

Color is one of the most straightforward processes of landscape design to understand. Some colors compliment each other more than others. An expert architect will know what colors look excellent together, more than just from an artistic perspective. There is a science behind color choices. Remember the color wheel and the concept of complementary colors versus opposite colors? Well, these factors tie into landscape design as well. Also, from a psychological standpoint, color affects mood. Blues are calming. Reds are intense, striking, and bring energy. Yellow reflects happiness and optimism. When planning your landscape, keep color in mind, because after all, some plants can serve as a focal point.

Scale and Proportion

Scale and proportion are often confused. Though relative to each other, they are not the same thing. Scale refers to the size of something and speaks in absolutes. Proportion compares the size of an element to another. Landscape design focuses more on proportion. It zeros in on how landscape elements will look together. Let’s use the example of a photo. In a group photo, taller people are typically put in the back for a reason. Why? Otherwise, you would not be able to see the shorter people. Landscape design works in the same fashion. If there is a row of small bushes, planting a large tree in front of them would obstruct the view.

Line and Focal Points

Lines and focal points matter a lot in landscape design. They train your eye where to look. When we take in our surroundings, our eyes naturally have a point of interest. A focal point could be a water feature, a tree, a patio with a beautifully decorated seating area, or a row of colorful plants and flowers. What would you want your focal point to be?
