With spring coming up, you may be thinking of ways to update your backyard. Both pergolas and gazebos can add structure, a focal point, and visual appeal to any yard or landscape. So, how do you decide which one to choose? How do you determine which accent piece will be a better fit? Keep reading below to learn the difference between a pergola and a gazebo.

The Gazebo

The gazebo has a rounded or octangle shape. Its origins derived from the 18th century and functioned as a way to accent large, countryside views. The gazebo also served as a way to watch out for trespassers or outsiders. Gazebos are typically open on all sides but can be customized. There is the option of adding a screen to keep insects away from entering the gazebo. Gazebos also have roofs that can aid in element shielding. If you want your gazebo to last then, wood is the best material. However, for more temporary usage then aluminum would be the best material. An aluminum gazebo can double as a screen tent. This kind of hardscaping only takes a few hours to install.

The Pergola

The pergola is a rectangular or square structure held up posts, pillars, and cross-beams. Its open lattice creates a shady walkway along with a place to sit. This landscape addition is perfect for hot, arid areas such as deserts but are functional anywhere else. Some people like that vines can grow on pergolas and provide shade. Otherwise, a rounded lattice can sit on top of cross rafters to provide shade.

Which One Do You Choose?

These structures differ in three ways. One, you have to think about their shape. Gazebos are rounder while pergolas are rectangular. Two, gazebos have roofs while crossbeams cover a pergola. Third, gazebos stand out from structures while pergolas can add on to them or can stand alone as well.

If you have a garden and want to add structure to it, a gazebo may be the better choice. If you need to upgrade your entire deck or patio then maybe a pergola could provide open space. Either way, both additions can help a home feel more like home. Both structures help to liven up a yard and create a space for parties, gatherings, and events. It would help to write a list of what purpose your gazebo or pergola should serve.
